Scope at Percept
At Percept, DBT skills sit inside individual therapy.
Joseph may draw on DBT principles and skills within individual therapy, informed by his training in CAMH's Borderline Personality Disorder clinic.
Percept does not currently offer the full multi-part DBT program.
The central stance
Your response makes sense, and something still needs to change.
Validation does not mean approving every action. It means understanding the conditions that made the response likely enough to work on what happens next.
Change does not require shame. Skills are easier to build when the person is not being treated as the problem.
A practical map
Slow the sequence down after the fact, then prepare for next time.
Before
Notice vulnerabilities such as sleep loss, stress, conflict, hunger, substances, or feeling rejected.
During
Trace the cues, thoughts, body changes, urges, and actions in order.
After
Name the immediate payoff, later cost, and the earliest point where another response could fit.
Skills
Build something usable for the high-pressure moment.
Mindfulness
Notice what is happening without immediately acting from it.
Distress tolerance
Get through a crisis moment without making the situation harder.
Emotion regulation
Understand what an emotion is signalling and change the conditions that intensify it.
Interpersonal effectiveness
Ask, set a limit, repair, or stay grounded in conflict more deliberately.
Fit and limits
The level of support should match the level of risk.
DBT-informed skills may fit when the aim is to understand a recurring sequence and practise more effective responses in individual therapy.
Frequent crises, serious self-harm or suicide risk, or a need for coordinated between-session support may call for a more intensive program, crisis services, medical care, or another level of support.
Questions
Useful distinctions.
Do I need a BPD diagnosis to use DBT skills?
No. Selected skills can be useful across many patterns. A diagnosis is not required to ask whether this kind of work may fit.
Is DBT only crisis work?
No. It can also support everyday emotion regulation, relationships, urges, and follow-through. The scope and intensity should still match the person's needs.
